Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s Mother’s Day!

What a year it’s been. Last year we spent this day celebrating our impending bundle. It wasn’t until weeks later that we found out there were in fact TWO bundles in there. What a year.

I’m not sure I really knew what being a mother was going to be like. I knew it was going to be hard. I knew at times it was going to be emotionally and physically draining. I had no idea all of these things could be easily overcome with a smile or a laugh or a grunt or a squeak.

These are some of the things I never thought I would do:

– Survive on 3-5 hours of sleep, every day, for months.
– Get really good at changing a dirty diaper on the couch in the glow of the television at 3am.
– Eat every meal with one hand.
– Laugh as my son peed all over himself while pooping into an open diaper on the changing table. Really, what else can you do in this situation?

– Cry to the song Winds of Change by the Scorpions on my way to Target for the first time after the boys were born.
– Pick “stuff” from various places on their little bodies- lots of hiding places on those little bodies.
– Spend days at a time in the same outfit because we haven’t gone anywhere or done anything other than sit on the couch and eat.

I always knew there would be love. Lots and lots of love. And there is, more than I ever could have imagined. And although I often threaten to eat them and their cuteness right up (seriously, cannibalism) I would protect them with my life.

So Happy Mother’s Day! And an especially Happy Mother’s Day to all of the new moms I’ve met in the past year!
