Before I Blogged…

I cooked.

When I was in school, living on my own, I liked nothing more than grocery shopping day. I would plan my meals and see what I could do. I was the girl who would make a pot roast on Sunday and eat it all week, turning it into Beef Stroganoff at some point just for fun. How may 21 year olds do you know who do that?

When I was dating my husband, I kicked it up a notch. I started reading every cooking magazine I could get my hands on. Food and Wine, Gourmet, Southern Living, Epicurian, Taste of Home, Martha Stewart Living- you name it, I read it. I still have stacks and stacks of them. At one point I started to weed through them and pull recipes out for a binder but I can’t part with them just yet.

When I was engaged I upped my game yet again- we cooked TOGETHER. Now grocery shopping and meal planning was a new adventure- what will HE like? He was picky* let me tell you. Even with the pickiness we both managed to gain a considerable amount of weight in the first year we were together. We were obsessed with the next meal and looked forward to cooking dinner every night.

After 9/11 I was a wreck. I turned to the Internet and after a really bad albeit short lived eBay addiction, I found Recipezaar. Recipezaar opened up an entirely new world to me. I’d cook, I’d post my recipes, I’d chat with other home cooks. I could be on there for hours on end. Our kitchen was never more diverse than when we were on Recipezaar daily.

I loved trying out a recipe and being able to contact the “chef” who posted it if I had questions. I loved being able to post a question in the middle of cooking dinner and having an answer before the dish was ruined. Giving good feedback at the end of the meal was always fun too. I quickly became part of this lovely online community.

When we moved back to Minnesota I spent less and less time there. I still go there for recipes- it’s the first place I look for EVERYTHING I’m going to cook. Whenever I check back I look at the recipes I’ve posted to see new ratings, check out pictures people have posted. I am always so pleased to see old favorites holding strong!

I also like to check back on old Zaarites. Mirj (who I think of daily when I watch news of the Middle East), Mean Chef (who is long gone from Zaar but whos Pulled Pork will live on to many as the gold standard), Bergy, Mysterygirl and Charishma to name just a few.

Troy and Gay started this little site in their house and just a few years ago sold the whole shebang to Food Network- not a bad deal at all. It’s a great site. I am always so pleased when someone asks me for a recipe (including the caterer at my sisters reception a few weeks ago) and I can just point them to Zaar.

*Mr. Wonderful no longer falls into the picky category- one by one the things he used to hate keep coming off the list. Our cupboards are filled with his surprising purchases and I really don’t know what to do with them sometimes!

I love the nostalgic twinge of this post! I completely relate, because it feels like a combo of before I had kids/blogged. 🙂
