Extreme Couponing?

Posted: May 11th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Stream of Consciousness | 4 Comments »

A few weeks ago a friend from High School started a Couponista group on Facebook.  We dish deals and coupons and how to save money while still feeding good stuff to our families.

For the record, the week we are moving, I am NOT feeding my family well.  In an effort to purge our pantry, freezer and fridge so I can start fresh at our new house AND not have to do dishes while packing and moving…we are eating pizza.  And Hot Pockets.  And things I *don’t* have to prepare.  This isn’t the every day for us.  When I went shopping yesterday I was kind of blown away by the selection of Hot Pockets.  When did this happen?

That is besides the point.

Do I have a point?

Coupons!  Deals!  Coupons+Deals!

Oh yes…

So this whole Extreme Couponingthing…I’m not entirely on board.  I use coupons religiously.  I even stack a manufacturers coupon with a store coupon- totally legit!  Why do I feel like I’m breaking the law?  (And this is for Target- why do your store coupons rarely ring up?  The cashier shouldn’t have to override the coupon when the item matches the picture!  Just an observation.)  When a cashier goes hunting through my bags to see if I did in fact purchase items, I want to just crawl into my purse.  Extreme couponers make every day couponers like me get treated like some sort of con artists.

Seriously.  When I walk out with a cart load of groceries and my reciept says I saved $34 but I spent $190…I’m not getting away with ANYTHING!

But, $1.00 off is $1.00 off.  So I’m going to continue to clip my coupons.  I’m going to continue to use my Ebates.  I’m going to use that Swagbucks search when I think about it…all in the name of saving money, getting a refund…because THAT is how I can contribute to my families bottom line.

Without building a stockpile of toothpaste and lunchmeat big enough to feed an army!

I’m trying to figure out what I want on my Coupons+Deals page up there at the top. Right now it’s got a lot of links to coupon generator sites, deal shopping sites etc. What should I keep? What should I lose? What would you click or not click? I’m not so sure I want them on my main page so I have a few of my favorites on the sidebar that I’ll probably rotate out over time…it’s a work in progress!

Tell me what you think, I’m listening!

In the meantime, I have Red Plum!

I totally agree! I feel like people are weirded out about my coupons now, where before it was just me being frugal.

My best savings is like $40. I feel proud, but also? I'm buying healthy stuff that my family NEEDS. I'm not buying 50 Butterfingers or 100 lbs of pasta. The "stockpile" thing is kind of creepy and end-of-world-ish for me.

I saw you at Frugal Friends Tuesday hop. I'm following you on Twitter and Google, and liking your FB page. I love coupons, too! I'm just not very good at finding them. Maybe your blog can help me out. Have a good day!
