Artistic Letters Alphabet Photography {A Review}

A few months ago my Mom, sister and I were perusing some shops in Northeast Minneapolis and as we left a store,  something caught my eye and I said to my Mom- “I kind of like those photos of letters found in nature.  I think I want to get our last name spelled out for the entry way.”  I filed that in the back of my mind, figuring it would never come to pass- those prints can be pretty spendy!

Fast forward a month or so and the opportunity presented itself for me to review a set of these letters found in nature, I was going to get to build my very own entry way art!  (A little too over the top?  I was pretty excited.) Photographer Jodi Gerber of ArtisticLetters has created an entire catalog of black & white letter images throughout the past 3 years – all by taking photos of objects in nature that resembled letters of the alphabet

C is for Clotfelter

Because we live in the city I tried to pull letters that had a more urban feel to them versus the ones that were actually made out of things found in nature- like trees and vines and that sort of thing.  We’re talking wrought iron and parts of buildings.  It was kind of hard to nail down exactly which ones to choose, there are over 250 images.  I suppose that is the fun of buying an alphabet set on CD, you can change your mind and it’s really no big deal.  You aren’t tied in to the ones someone else picked, you can make it all you!

The project I wanted to do most (and really, the possibilities are endless!) was our last name on the wall of our entry way.  I chose all my letters and because I have kind of a piece of crap printer, I ordered 4×6 prints of them from my local 1-hour photo place.  This was probably the longest part of the process- simply getting the ones I wanted uploaded so I could order them.

I sometimes forget that our last name is 10 letters long.  That’s a long frame, or at least a lot of smaller frames!  I figure I can cut a few of the photos  down to fit into smaller 3.5×5 frames or maybe matte the first letter in a 5×7 or 8×10, something to make it stand out.

Kinda like this:

We’ve got our prints and now we are just accumulating our frames that are *just right* so I can get my entry all finished up.  I’m pretty happy with the results so far (that is just part of my name..kinda).  I never thought when I mentioned that to my mom that cold day in April that I would have this opportunity.  I think I should start wishing for something big…like a million dollars!
