Do You Have Any Flags?

That’s what everyone asked when they called.

“Do you have any flags?”

After about an hour, that first day, the answer was “No, we’ve sold out.”

It wasn’t a surprise, I mean Target stocks a larger selection of flags for a few weeks in the summer to cover Memorial day and the 4th of July and they sit (mostly) unsold. For people to expect a store to have an endless supply sitting around just in case there is a tragedy such as 9/11 is absurd.

That didn’t stop people from railing at the poor girls who got to answer the phones at our little central Missouri Target (Which makes you wonder why, if they are so patriotic, they don’t already have a flag?).

We also got endlessly informed about how Target was owned by the French, doesn’t support veterans and was, of course, very un-American because of the no flags in-stock issue. (Seriously, there isn’t much you can do when the FLAG companies can’t keep up with demand).

How many of those flags do you bet are still hanging today?

Because of a T-Shirt we sold with a picture of Times Square that happened to have this ad (for a car I cannot think of right now) on a screen in the background that said:

The End

(of car buying as you know it)

Is Near

some believed Target may have known about the attacks all along (I don’t know if they questioned the car company or the ad agency that made the ad- but Target, selling the T-Shirts were surely in on it)!  Of course we got to hear about that too (and the shirt was promptly pulled from stock). Then came the people worried the rock dust left in the pockets of some stone washed jeans might be Anthrax.

Let’s just say working in retail after 9/11 was…interesting.  People have many ways of showing their grief.

I remember my best friend calling me and telling me to turn on the news after the 1st attack.  I remember listening as the towers fell as I was driving to work.  I remember sitting at work and having it be so dead we all just stood around and talked about it, every so often running upstairs to watch the TV in the break room.  I remember people lining up for gas because they thought it was going to hit $3.00 a gallon (a lot when you are paying just over a buck).  I remember the impromptu barricade made with large SUV’s at the entrance points to the research reactor on campus that was just down the hill from my house.  I remember watching Aaron Brown for hours and hours, mesmerized by the screen at all hours of the day and night.  I remember watching the numbers in the corner of the screen over the weeks that followed.  Swallowing up the grief.

And I remember hanging up a flag in our window that faced Providence Road.
