Leaky Pads and Bunchy Bras

This week on the Breastfeeding Blog hop, sponsored by Life with Levi, Diary of a Devil Dog Wife and myself, we are talking about the breastfeeding products we DIDN’T like.  That’s right.  We are going to dish on all the things that we hated (or things we just thought were lame) so you can avoid them at all costs!

Off the top of my head, I can think of one thing I *really* disliked and thankfully I only had to use it for a short-time.

That product also happened to be my very first product review and giveaway– imagine my disappointment when I was unable to give it a rave review.  I did soften the blow a little bit, because it does have some redeeming qualities*, but in reality, I really hated it.

The product was Baby’s Bliss Nipple Cream for Mommies and what I really hated was that you had to wipe it off before nursing.  I didn’t need to use a nipple cream or lanolin very often and for that I am grateful.  I cannot imagine putting this on and wiping it off everytime Judah nursed.  I was annoyed after about 2 days.

*It did have some great qualities, it was free of many of the chemicals that people wish to avoid and for women who are allergic to lanolin it would be a good choice.  But, it made me crazy.

Another item would be the NUK brand reusable breast pads.  Yeah, they were worthless.  They were scratchy.  They leaked.  A lot.  And I didn’t even leak that much but it was like they were wicking everything right into whatever fabric they touched.  They were rigid and looked lumpy in my nursing bras (not that any breast pads look great). I relegated them to the back of my drawer for emergencies only.

The last thing, and this is purely my fault because I am lazy and cheap.  My nursing bras (I believe they are Playtex).  They were ill-fitting and plain old ugly as hell.  When I had the boys I came home from the hospital and I realized I had no nursing bras so I had my mom pick a few up from the outlet mall on her way over.  They did their job, but that was about all they did.  They were scratchy, they were bunchy in some places and tight in others.  My boobs never got the memo to kick production into high gear so they looked deflated half the time and they looked terrible under clothing.

I should probably go burn those at a rally somewhere just so I’m not tempted to use them again some day!

So, what products are on your LAME list?  Link up to this weeks hop and help spread the word about products we should all be wary of!

Thanks a lot – My boobs totally let down just reading this post!

I did a good review of a bra awhile ago and have come to hate the damn thing. It feels like poor taste to go back and diss it though. Luckily I was happy with my reusable pads (Medela I think) but the best ones were my Danish Wool pads. Holy crap those things are AMAZING. Unfortunately one went through the wash and shrunk. So sad. $20+ a pair so I haven't replaced them but they would be worth every penny and I'll definitely get them again for my next baby.

I never understood those nipple creams you would have to wipe off before using. Isn't the point to have less stuff brushing against your nipple when it's sore?

Most of my nursing bras were hand me downs and don't fit well either. Now I have one bravado one that is soooo comfortable and supportive. Unfortunately, it's like the only bra I wear, and it's starting to really wear out. I'm just not a pay-$50-for-a-bra kind of person. (Might explain why my boobs now reach my knees.)

I was never able to find a nursing bra that i was happy with, although granted i could never bring myself to spend much money on one. I ended up(and still do) just buying regular bras that were easy enough to pull down. Great post!

It's funny how the things some people hate are the things other people love. Well, not love, but I didn't dislike the NUK brand nursing pads. They were cheap and worked well enough for me. I tried reusable nursing pads and could not find any that were actually absorbent enough for me.

As sore as I was in the beginning, having to wipe off my nips every time my daughter nursed would have killed me! Yikes!

I had the opposite problem that you did with the nursing bras. I thought ahead and went out and bought several really expensive bras from a nursing shop. The problems was that after I started losing the baby weight (because of the awesome breast feeding!), they were too big on me, and rubbed, bunched, etc. I wound up buying some cheap ones at Motherhood that I love!

I haven't had to get nursing bras yet and it is one of the baby things I am not looking forward to, other friends who are big busted describe it as a nightmare
