Makin’ my List, Clippin’ my Q’s

I love a good coupon.  I mean, I *have* to.  Our budget is so tight it squeaks.

Every two weeks I go “big” grocery shopping- I make a run to Target and then Cub and get everything from produce to paper products for less than many families spend in a week.  I have a smaller budget set aside for milk, bread and produce we’ll need later in the 2 week period, but for us, shopping every 2 weeks works the best.  I am by no means an extreme couponer!

Before Thanksgiving, I kind of fell off the couponing wagon and I paid dearly for that.  I wasn’t planning meals, I wasn’t checking my favorite coupon sites, I wasn’t making a detailed list and checking it twice before I headed out the door.  Something about it finally getting cold and being so dark at such an early hour made me want to crawl into bed as soon as the boys went down for the night.  Matching store and manufacturer coupons with sale or price cut took way too much brain power.

But, it’s a new year.

Christmas has been paid for, it’s time to get back into the swing of things.  Saving money through coupons is one of the things I can do to help the bottom line in our little family.  Stretching the dollars means we can afford to get Starbucks on the days Yogi Dad works from home and go out for a bite to eat when my Mom watches the boys on Thursday nights.  For us, it really is the little things that make life on a budget a bit easier

Aside from grocery shopping, I try to use a coupon code for pretty much everything I buy online.  Sites like Coupon Chief make it easy.  Let’s say I have a Victoria’s Secret giftcard burning a hole in my wallet (because really, my budget does not allow for Victoria’s Secret shopping otherwise!), I just search “Victoria’s Secret” and see what comes up- sometimes it’s a percentage off, sometimes it’s a dollar amount off a certain line of products, sometimes it’s free shipping- all of those things help.  (I always try to get free shipping, I really hate to pay shipping.)

Having 3 kids 3 and under means I rarely go to actual brick and mortar stores to shop (other than grocery shopping).  Online shopping is a mom’s best friend.  Need a birthday gift?  Sympathy card?  A six-month supply of your favorite dish detergent?  You can get anything you want without stepping foot outside your house with kids in tow, and usually at a fraction of the cost you’d pay in a store.  I love online shopping and sites like Coupon Chief make it so much easier for me.

One of the things I love most about Coupon Chief is their Pays-2-Share program.  With Pays-2-Share, when you come across a coupon code you can upload it to their system and anytime someone (anyone!) makes a purchase using that code, you get 2% back.  They save money.  You EARN money- without having to spend a dime!  Considering the barrage of coupon codes that find their way into our in-boxes each day, I think this is a brilliant way to make that spam work in our favor for once.

Are you an online shopper?  Are you like me and constantly searching for coupon codes to your favorite stores before you make a purchase?  What is your favorite online shopping tip?

This post was written with consideration for Coupon Chief the largest source of online coupons and store discounts for apparel, electronics, travel, entertainment and more!

I love online shopping and need to stop!
But I do need to do what you do and start planning meals. We never plan which means we never have food in the house which means we always end up buying fast food. My pants are getting tight (which isn't good because they were already tight!) I am so tired of fast food!!!!
My recent post And this puts the cherry on top of my already awesome New Year!

After the last month I totally hear you on the fast food. We too were doing the empty cupboards, quick run and get dinner somewhere thing and then had a 2 week vacation which included 5 days in the car, so we had more fast food inthe past month than I probably had in the 6 months prior. Back to planning for me!

Thank you for the site! I agree we are on a super tight budget and the last two weeks of December we did awful. We ate out twice a week and never eat out and that adds up quick. Plus with going to other people's for dinner etc we just didn't plan as well. I need to get back to my meal planning and so far so good!
