Welcome to day number 16 of 30 Days of Dipes! Today is sponsored by:
Today we are taking a break from cloth diapers and looking at what some would call an essential cloth diapering accessory: Wool Dryer Balls! All three of us will be giving away a set of Organic Wool Dryer Balls from Raw Organics! Check out what The Gnome’s Mom and Life With Levi have to say and feel free to enter on all three sites- triple your chances! As an added bonus- this is not *only* for cloth diaper users- everyone can benefit from adding wool dryer balls to their clothes drying routine!
The Dirty Details:
One of the things that cloth diapering advocates always talk about is how much better for the environment cloth diapering is. There is no 30 pound bag of diaper trash to haul out every few days that will sit in landfills for hundreds of years, cloth has almost no waste in comparison. On the other hand, you have to wash and dry cloth diapers which can use up a lot of energy. Of course you could always hang all of your diapers to dry, but sometimes that just isn’t feasible.
So, what do you do? How do you cut down your energy consumption?
You get yourself some wool dryer balls!
These completely unassuming solid wool dryer balls made from certified organic wool will change your laundry routine forever!
I have been hearing about wool dryer balls for awhile now but I hadn’t gotten around to actually trying them. Wool dryer balls help cut down on the time it takes clothes to dry by bouncing around and absorbing some of the moisture from your load. Wool can absorb up to 30% of it’s weight in liquid! Obviously, the more balls you add to your dryer, the more time you can shave off of your dry time.
Raw Organics Wool Dryer Balls are different from some of the other dryer balls out there. They are made with a felted wool core instead of an acrylic core. They weigh less and are much quieter in the dryer. I have been using our set of dryer balls for about a month now and I have seen a huge improvement in the dry time.
This was my previous routine:
Wash my dipes- (wash on hot without detergent, wash on hot with detergent)
Dry for 30 minutes, pull out any covers or anything that was dry to the touch (liners, wipes)
Dry for 60-75 more minutes, hang dry whatever was left that wasn’t completely dry (fitteds, AIO’s)
For some items that meant over 100 minutes in the dryer and I still had items that weren’t dry!
This is my new routine:
I wash as I usually do
Dry for 30, pull out my covers and miscellaneous dry items
Dry for 30 minutes and pull out anything dry to the touch (most of my inserts are dry at this point)
Dry the few remaining items for 15-20 minutes if there are a lot or if it’s just a couple of things (my OsoCozy AIO is always the last thing dry) I will just hang them up and then fold them in the morning.
By adding 4 wool dryer balls to my dryer I cut 20 minutes from my dry time!
The biggest thing these have done for me is make me aware of how long the dryer has been running. I wanted to see how little or long it was actually taking so I was checking frequently whereas before I would just crank it up on the second run through and deal with it later. I have successfully cut 20 minutes off my dryer time with just 4 dryer balls!
In the process I’m both saving energy and prolonging the life of my diapers.
Of course Wool Dryer Balls can be used for any laundry you have so even if you don’t have cloth diapers, this should interest you. They have anti-static properties and naturally soften your fabrics as they help to dry them. You can get each ball scented with essential oils if you want (although this is not recommended for use with diapers as it may cause issues with your PUL) for an extra charge per ball.
I would highly recommend adding Raw Organics Wool Dryer Balls to your laundry routine. These are a great handmade product from a lovely WAHM. I seriously can’t believe it took me this long to try them out.
An added bonus: the cats love it when a stray ball ends up on the floor- they love to bat them around more than any other toy in the house!
