Claire Bidwell Smith

The Rules of Inheritance is a memoir by Claire Bidwell Smith that tells her story about growing up as an only child, having both parents diagnosed with cancer just months apart at the age of 14 and losing both of her parents to cancer by the age of 25. Eventually, after a few years of tumultuous relationships and drifting from place to place and making some questionable choices, Smith pulls it all together and becomes a therapist who specializes in grief.

I have to be honest. I found it difficult to like this book. I don’t know if it was because of the excessively brooding tone or the idealistic life that could have been ripped from the pages of Sassy magazine (right down to the tiny New England liberal arts college and the tour of Europe) but it was just too much.

Aside from that, it seemed to take a long time to get to the part I had been waiting for from page one. The part where the story starts to make a turn- the realization that she was alone, that there was no one “to call”. Of course by the time this revelation occurs, it seems contrived.

Sure, there are moments, like when she is caring for her dying father when I shed a few tears at the sweetness (I do have a heart in case you were wondering), but for the most part I just wasn’t engaged.

18 year old me would have loved this book.  Which I probably would have read while wearing Doc Martens, listening to jazz and smoking clove cigarettes.
