Breastfeeding Blog Hop hosted by The Slacker Mom

Welcome to Week 17 of the Breastfeeding Blog Hop!

This week we are taking a walk on the wild side and talking about something I’m pretty sure was never a topic of discussion when our mothers and grandmothers were nursing: Body Modification.

From Etsy

Thirty years ago you didn’t see too many moms inked up but our generation has a different prerogative when it comes to embellishing our bodies either through tattoos or piercings.

I happen to have 3 tattoos and a nose piercing (I have a small stud). The last time I sat in a chair at a tattoo shop I didn’t even have kids on my mind but the words I had placed permanently between my shoulder blades happen to be very fitting to my life:

I am not afraid. I was born to do this.

It’s a Joan of Arc quote (or a bastardization of a Joan of Arc quote depending on who you talk to) and I love it.

Since having the boys I have been trying to design a tattoo in my head that incorporates all of their names somehow.  I am really indecisive though so it might be awhile before that finally happens- it definitely isn’t something I would take on while breastfeeding and thankfully it’s not something most (I say most because there are plenty of sketchy tattoo artists out there) that will knowingly tattoo a pregnant or nursing mother simply because of the risks that are involved with getting a tattoo in the first place (namely infection from improperly sterilized equipment).

You can check out what Le Leche League International has to say about tattoos here.

So, what is your experience with body modification?  Did you wonder if it would affect nursing in any way?

Be sure to check out my co-hosts in the Breastfeeding Blog Hop: Happiness Redefined and The Gnome’s Mom as well as all of the other awesome moms who link up each week!

I actually got my second tattoo when my son was 6mo & I was still breastfeeding. The artist I used was a friend who has inked several friends. I’m also familiar with his sterilization procedures. Then, of course, I did the research of BF & getting a tattoo. It was safe & did not impede my breastfeeding at all. And I love the tattoo that combines my family together. 🙂

I don't know anything about the nursing bit, but honestly, I regret it. I got mine done when I was 19 (I'm now 27) – a fairy on my back and a star on each hand. They may look and sound cool at some time, but then you get to a point of getting tired looking of at them. I advise anyone to think heavily whether they truly want and need a tattoo.
