Flats and Handwashing Challenge: Day 1!

Posted: May 21st, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Cloth Diapers | Tags: Cloth Diapers, Flats Challenge | 3 Comments »

If you are a cloth diapering mom or dad and you haven’t heard about the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge, you probably will this week! Over 450 bloggers have signed up to use nothing but flats and covers for the next 7 days, handwashing and line drying instead of resorting to a washing machine and dryer. The Flats and Handwashing Challenge is hosted by the always awesome Kim over at Dirty Diaper Laundry. Check out the details page and sign up!

Day One: What do I expect to Learn and why am I taking the challenge?

Last year we did the challenge even though we were knee deep in moving and unpacking and we really thought we had nailed it. We were a prefold family so flats weren’t that big of a stretch for us. I also had a baby who only pooped every 4th day so handwashing was a breeze!

Things have changed in the past year.

Just as I did last year- only one of the boys will be in flats. Judah is currently going through a phase where we have about 15 seconds to get his diaper on or he is across the room. I had to give up my fitteds and woolies, I can barely get a pocket on without a struggle, a two-part diaper like a flat and cover is completely out of the question.

So, I had to choose between Lincoln and Wyatt. Lincoln is the one who is most amenable to diaper changes but he is also starting to potty train so we have dryer diapers some of the time but also the challenge of getting them on and off quickly. Alternately, Wyatt likes to take his pants off during naps and overnight so I think a 2 part diaper is kind of out for him to. If I had to choose, I would rather not work up a sweat just to put on a diaper…so Lincoln it is!

Flats and Handwashing Challenge Day 1

I recently dyed our prefolds so they are all jazzed up and ready to go. I have chosen my cutest covers (which all seem to have a bird theme) and am excited to get some use out of those as they have been temporarily replaced by pockets. We’ll be using wool overnight, starting with doubled up flats but switching to a fitted if the first night is a flop.

I’ll be posting a picture daily, but there will be no bum shots. Sorry, I’ve had some strange search results lately and I have removed all photos of my kids in their diapers.

So, what do I expect to learn? I’m guessing I will learn just how well I can keep these puppies clean since I will more than likely be dealing with more poop than last year. And, I’m doing it just because it’s fun- it will keep me on my toes and force me to get back to hanging my diaper laundry out in the sun which will be awesome now that that pesky tree is gone!

Are you taking the challenge? Did you do it last year? Are you excited? Apprehensive? Skeptical?

I'm sorry you're getting odd search results. I would tell you a few of mine, but I don't want to bring more people like that to your blog. I meant to dye flats, but never got around to it.
