Flats and Handwashing Challenge: Day 2!

Posted: May 22nd, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Cloth Diapers | Tags: Cloth Diapers, Flats Challenge | 5 Comments »

If you are a cloth diapering mom or dad and you haven’t heard about the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge, you probably will this week! Over 450 bloggers have signed up to use nothing but flats and covers for the next 7 days, handwashing and line drying instead of resorting to a washing machine and dryer. The Flats and Handwashing Challenge is hosted by the always awesome Kim over at Dirty Diaper Laundry. Check out the details page and sign up!

Day 2: What supplies I will be using

Flats: I am using the dozen birdseye flats I used last year, this year they are spiffed up with a brand new dye job! I am planning on using mostly the pad fold, simply because I like it to be as easy as possible.

Covers: I chose a few that I love but don’t use very often since we started using wool: a Gen-Y that I just got at the Great Cloth Diaper Change, my new Swaddlebees Capri, my Thirsties, and 2 Flips. Everything has snaps and they are all different bird patterns (except the Flips which are solid).

Wipes: We use cloth wipes and I may or may not add them to the regular diaper laundry.

Overnights: The plan is to use 2 flats in a wool soaker at night. I have a couple pairs of upcycled wool soakers from My Eco Baby (on Etsy) that will be rotated through for his nighttime cover. I did have to figure out how to Origami fold tonight and dig out a Snappi in an effort to keep everything from moving around in his woolies. Three years in and I don’t think any of my kids has ever actually worn a snappi! If the double flats + woolies combo doesn’t work at night I will be putting him in a fitted + wool for nights.

Flats and Handwashing Challenge Day 1

Washing: Just like last year, I will be doing the washing in my bathtub. Flats rinse pretty clean so I don’t think I need any sort of special equipment. I’ll be using Biokleen detergent and lots of elbow grease. The plan right now is to wash in the morning so I can get them on the line bright and early. I’m just tossing them in a hospital basin so I can keep them separate from the other diapers. I think I need to rinse them as they are used though. I am trying to remember what we did last year…

Drying: I *thought* I was going to have a new clothesline up today (our old one was collateral damage when the tree came down) but Yogi dad couldn’t find it at the store last night so I am going to pick it up this morning while the boys are at school. Let’s pray for sunshine otherwise I will be rigging something up in my house like last time.

Other than staying away from berries and dried fruit in an effort to keep the crazy poops away during this challenge, I think that pretty much sums up what we’re doing here!

How was day 1 at your house? Are you using a snappi or going easy with a pad fold?

We woke up to a lake from a doubled flat. I really miss my fitteds!

This is my first year doing the challenge. I had a great day yesterday and overnight she was in a flat, diaper bag fold with a smaller flat pad folded for extra absorbency, the outside layers were just damp. Covered with a flip. This morning I used my camping washer and found I needed to do about 5 rinses. They are on a drying rack in the kitchen right now as it is drizzling outside. So far so good. I should have toner arms at the end of the week. 🙂

Lol your comment about staying away from certain foods made me crack up. Corn on the cob has been on sale here, maybe not the best idea? Hmmm…

I'm keeping it easy and using the pad fold, except at nights because I use wool on my daughter then.

I used the pad fold all of Monday and Tuesday. My snappi wasn't working well with the flannel receiving blankets I'm using. Today I finally tracked down two of my missing pins, and that's been great! I love the fit I get with pins, and I love being able to try out more folds.
