Flats and Handwashing Challenge: Day 5

If you are a cloth diapering mom or dad and you haven’t heard about the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge, you probably will this week! Over 450 bloggers have signed up to use nothing but flats and covers for the next 7 days, handwashing and line drying instead of resorting to a washing machine and dryer. The Flats and Handwashing Challenge is hosted by the always awesome Kim over at Dirty Diaper Laundry. Check out the details page and sign up!

Day 5: Tips from the Flats Challenge

Last year, I was a ball of nerves going into this challenge. It was the first cloth diaper relate “thing” I had done and I was afraid I was going to screw it all up and get pulled over by the Crunchy Police and kicked out of the cloth diaper club.

It turns out, I didn’t need to worry. Everything went great last year.

This year as we approached the date I was still kind of on the fence. With three kids in cloth and only a dozen flats, I was only going to diaper one in flats but the obvious choice (Judah) wasn’t really the best choice with his new found attitude about diapering in general. Namely that he doesn’t want to wear one. Ever.

So I didn’t know if I was going to do it. I didn’t have a “plan”. Right up until the day before the challenge started I thought I might back out until I walked into the Family Closet where we keep our cloth diapers, pulled out my flats and covers and made a pile. I informed Yogi Dad that Lincoln was to be in all flats, all the time for the next 7 days and we just went with it.

I didn’t have a huge elaborate washing routine. We didn’t worry about whether or not nights were going to be an issue or if we would be able to have enough from day to day. We just jumped right in.

And it’s been just as easy as the rest of our routine. I have a renewed love for flats- so much everyone wore flats and covers to bed last night!

Flats and Handwashing Challenge Day 5

So that would be my tip- keep it simple. Relax, have fun with it! This isn’t a competition and in the end we all get a big ol pat on the back for attempting it and sticking with it.

My other tip would be to avoid berries and dried fruit. I don’t know about your house but at mine they are the top diaper wreckers. Save yourself some trouble if you can!
