Do You Design Your Own Online Spaces?

by Erin Clotfelter on 11/17/2012

When I first started blogging, way back in 2006, Facebook was still in it’s infancy and Social Media was barely a blip on my radar.  Now I have to think about things like Facebook advertising and how to engage my readers both here and on Twitter and Facebook.  For the most part, I’ve given up on all of that in order to have a little less stress in my life.  Who has the time?

I do however like having a new look every once in awhile and since I sorely lack the skills to design a pretty page all by myself, I usually hire someone out to do it for me.  A quick Google search will land you about a gazillion hits for people and companies ready and willing to help you design your Facebook page with easy to use Facebook fan page templates.

I don’t think I’m in the minority in needing help with design- most of us bloggers set out to write, maybe post some photos.  Design is often a second thought.  The ability to leave the design elements up to someone else (with a little input as to my likes and needs and wants) is a true blessing.  The last time I updated my look here at The Slacker Mom was in August 2011.  I hemmed and hawed over the colors and once it was done, I’ll admit, it took some time to grow on me.  But, I can’t even remember what it looked like before!

This summer I quietly started up a new blog over at MinnesotaMom.com and I’ve been trying to figure out what I want that space to look like.  I’m not sure I will invest any money into it since I am most likely not going to monetize that space, so it will be a work in progress for awhile!

So tell me, did you design your own blog, Facebook pages and Twitter Profiles, or did you source those jobs out to a design wiz?

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for SOCI, who would be more than happy to assist with any number of design elements on your website or Social Media Site!

I do it all myself, in Blogger anyway which actually makes it pretty easy with templates. When I want something I can’t figure out how to do in blogger, I google it and someone, somewhere has created code for it and will give instructions on exactly where to insert the code. I do like the design part too, tho, just as much as the writing! And I like to change it too often to have to pay someone every time I want a change.

I usually give a try to the default layouts and templates and I only change or customize it if necessary or it could make the work easier. I believe in content-is-king theory so I always spend the most of my time with the content, and there are a lot of free and user-friendly platforms which are also customizable. And honestly, of course, because I1m not into coding:)
